Visitors at the Adlou Art Gallery are often intrigued by the truly impressive mouldings (or ‘frames’) adding an air of refined elegance to the works on display. And rightly so, for each moulding gracing works by the likes of Adriaan Boshoff is indeed a work of art in its own right.
And who better to add this ‘final touch’ to these masterpieces than Adriaan Boshoff Jr? He works in a studio at his home a few kilometres from Hartebeerpoort and explains that, before a suitable moulding can be designed, an in-depth study of the art work is essential: “You need to really get the picture into your mind before you can select the right mouldings,” he says. Like his father, Adriaan will spend hours creating a frame, only to discard it if the completed work does not measure up to his standards. According to Adriaan, the professional moulder can “easily” form a fairly accurate idea of the décor in clients’ homes by carefully looking at the paintings they select. A large Adriaan Boshoff, for example, is unlikely to be placed in a dainty room with avant-garde furnishings. Similarly, a piece by Dimitrov Branko, being less formal and more ethereal, would probably grace a lighter and more airy room. A really modern piece, says Adriaan, calls for a moulding very different from either of the previous two, as it is most likely to be destined for a modern home.
These are, of course, generalizations, yet they are reasonably accurate. A large, ornately-framed Adriaan Boshoff, for example, would make such a dominant statement that it would, in fact, demand a large room with little else displayed on the walls. Adriaan’s mouldings are selected almost exclusively from South Africa and Italy. For quotations at your home or for any other enquiries, Adriaan Junior may be contacted at 083 700 2723.
